Change is not something that we should fear.
Rather, it is something that we should welcome.
For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom,
and no one in this world would ever move forward
to become the person they’re meant to be. (anon.)
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Classes are 90 minutes long, unless otherwise stated on the schedule
Gentle Yoga Class (beginner level,
not heated) - Classic hatha
yoga postures to build strength, balance and flexibility. Designed for people who have
little or no yoga experience. Small classes and detailed instructions will help you relax in a safe,
healing environment. Each class is adjusted to the level of the
students.
Vinyasa Yoga (beginner to intermediate, not heated) You will be led through Vinyasa style asanas with a focus on connecting your breath to movement. While the movement is intended to be creative, devotional and dynamic, optional modifications and adjustments are provided. Take it at your own pace and enjoy the benefits of this soulful class!
Astanga (Intermediate level, warm)
this class closely follows the yoga chikitsa or primary series of the astanga yoga system. using heat with
ujayii or victorious breath and intense focus produces a high energy atmosphere. the practice follows a set series of postures, or asana. It starts with sun salutations and then a standing series, progresses to a seated series with vinyasa and concludes with a closing series including inversions. Each movement is initiated with the breath.
Astanga yoga is a continuously flowing sequence of movements.
Hatha Yoga (beginner to
intermediate levels, not heated) - Classic hatha yoga postures, possibly
including sun salutes, focusing on alignment and breathing. Every
class a little different. Great for beginners!
Hot Yoga (beginner to intermediate,
heated to 95-100 degrees) - stretches & strengthens every area of the body
necessary to balance & restore all systems to optimal health. Our
room is heated to allow for a deeper release & to avoid injury.
Hot Yoga class is recommended for everyone, from first day beginners to
advanced students. The magic of this class is that everyone is
practicing the same posture at different levels of ability, and there is
an exact position for everyone at every level, which our trained
instructors will help you find.
Hot Yoga to Sacred Music (experience
required, heated to 95+ degrees) - this is a Hot Yoga flow class done in silence with minimal instruction and to sacred music. Students must be familiar with Hot Yoga or Bikram asanas (about 10 classes of regular Hot Yoga or Bikram will prepare you for this class). It is an extremely powerful and peaceful practice while also being challenging as it is a flow class, which moves more quickly and has fewer rests.
We learned this practice from Lisa Goodwin, Jimmy Barkan's most senior teacher, and we will be using her music, which is a combination of sacred music from all over the world and various traditions including soothing chants and songs in many languages.

Stefanie Sertich
Stefanie, a choreographer, theatre director and acting teacher in New York City and on Cape Cod, found yoga four years ago in Portland, Oregon. She continues her practice in New York City and is a 200-Hour Certified Yoga Teacher in Vinyasa Flow. She trained with Jacqueline Heisel of Frog Lotus in North Adams. Yoga complements her parallel life as a creative artist and she incorporates it into her acting classes.
Joanna Benevides
Living in New York City and working in the fashion industry for over 4 years,
Joanna was always on-the-go and she found her mind and body over-worked,
over-stressed and in need of a change. Then she stepped onto her yoga mat
and discovered the power of her breath and learned how to quiet her mind and
listen to her heart. What started as a hobby, turned into a new path in Joanna's
life. She now finds herself continually awed by the ability of her yoga practice
to ground her and bring her closer to her true self. As her practice grew, so did
her appreciation and love for not only the flowing movement of the sequences,
but the spirituality and philosophy of the practice. It has shown her how create
space, to breathe and bring calm into her life through the connection of the
mind, body and spirit. To Joanna, the practice of yoga is an incredibly beautiful
and a challenging journey from the head to the heart.
Joanna is truly honored to share her love for the practice with others through
teaching. She finds inspiration from the very simple beauties in life and weaves
these inspirations into her classes. Her classes are deep and dynamic, emphasizing fluid movement and breathe, strong alignment and grace -
creating a place of self-acceptance, to truly release, surrender, breathe and just
"be." She encourages her students to smile, laugh and celebrate life through
their yoga practice in hopes to uplift and inspire all to open their
hearts and find the beauty in being present.
Kate McHugh
Kate offers a unique blend in styles of Hatha Yoga & Eastern philosophy, acquired from several teachers and studies from various parts of India and the world. Hatha yoga is the physical aspect of yoga. Yoga is a beautiful philosophy, combining movement, flexibility, social and personal behavior, relaxation and meditation, to unite body, mind, and spirit. The intention of the Vinyasa Flow class is to bring participants into alignment with the magnificent rhythms of the universe. Therefore, Kate’s class combines fluid movement, poses (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and sun salutations, to include variations for all levels of study and practice. In sacred space with other participants, students become aligned and balanced, moving towards optimum health and well being.
Merideth Butler
